Storm Watching
What better way to experience nature and the rugged beauty of the west coast than to witness the power of a storm? During the fall and winter months, the west coast of Vancouver Island receives a number of exhilarating winter storms. The Pacific Ocean pounds the coast, sending twenty-foot waves crashing against the shore. Driftwood and shells are hurled onto sandy beaches and the air is misty with sea spray.
Storm watching can be enjoyed from many points along the west coast of Vancouver Island, but the Pacific Rim National Park and the neighbouring communities of Tofino and Ucluelet are the best locations. Accommodation is available right along the shore, providing optimum viewing from the warmth and comfort of your room.
The more courageous storm watcher can don rubber boots and a rain slicker and walk the long stretches of sandy beach to feel the drama of the storm. When the roar of the surf calms and the storm has passed, stroll the beaches at a leisurely pace for excellent beachcombing.
Although storm watching is most spectacular along the west coast of the Island, it is also possible from the rest of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Storms are less frequent, but you can still hear and watch as they roll towards the coast. An isolated thunder-and-lightning storm viewed out over the ocean is also spectacular.
