Picnics in the Park

Whether you’re seeking shade on a warm summer day or looking for a relaxing fall activity, Victoria is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic. And with Greater Victoria’s large number of parks and beaches, as well as forest and lake-side options, there really is a picnic spot for everyone.

We’ve assembled a few favourites that include stellar views as well as vibes ranging from family fun to romantic. Whether you’re thinking breakfast, lunch or moonlit meal, we’ve got a picnic spot for you!

 

Family Fun

A picnic with the family can be a great option for those with energetic young ones. Kids can run and play, grabbing bites to munch on as they please. Two great park options are Beacon Hill Park and Cadboro-Gyro Park.

 

Beacon Hill Park

Beacon Hill Park is a 200-acre oasis is located steps away from downtown, with loads of amenities (including washrooms). There are lots of different areas to explore for kids of all ages. Fun for the whole family, the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm is a good place to start. After you’re finished cuddling with the goats, head to one of the two playgrounds or splash parks. Having worked up a healthy appetite, you’re ready to enjoy a picnic with the whole family and perhaps a nap in the shade of the Garry Oak Meadows. Beacon Hill has lots of birdlife, including peacocks, but be sure to respect signage regarding feeding wildlife.

 

Cadboro-Gyro Park

A bit further away from downtown, on Cadboro Bay; Cadboro-Gyro Park is well-loved by locals. While this park is significantly smaller than Beacon Hill at 15 acres, it is right on the beach, with stunning views of the Cascade Mountains. Get your camera ready – the beach-themed playground includes iconic a giant octopus, salmon, and a sea serpent (known as Cadborosaurus) play sculptures. Amenities include a picnic area, perfect for laying out your spread, as well as washrooms and a fun zipline.

 

Earn Your Picnic with a Hike

Stretching your legs and getting into more nature-based spaces is a great way to “earn” your picnic. Elk/Beaver Lake Park and Swan Lake are two beautiful areas with a wilder feel, where you can enjoy the natural surroundings and your al fresco meal.

 

Elk/Beaver Lake Park

If you’re looking for a picnic spot that blends traditional picnic amenities, such as picnic tables and lawn area, as well as approachable hiking trails, Elk/Beaver Lake Park is your perfect destination. Located just off the Patricia Bay Highway, a 20-minute drive from downtown, this park offers great trails as well as access to fun on the water. Elk/Beaver Lake offers swimming, canoeing, fishing, and a Nature Centre that operates on summer weekends. The longest trail is a 10km, but there are lots of shorter trails available.

 

Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary

Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary is an accessible greenspace is a true jewel in Greater Victoria, that aims to protect the low-lying wetland around Swan Lake and a rare Garry oak meadow on the rocky summit of Christmas Hill. As a visitor to this sanctuary, it is important to note that dogs, bikes, BBQs, fishing, and smoking are not permitted. Enjoy the walking trails as you take in the sound of calling frogs, birds and squirrels, or watch dragon flies dart. Founders’ Wharf provides an ideal location to enjoy a picnic while taking in the sights, sounds and smells of this wonderous park.

Fun fact: Elk/Beaver Lake is the training centre for Canada’s National Rowing team.

 

Bring on the Romance

Day or evening, Dallas Road and its breezy pathway offers the ultimate setting for walking hand-in hand as you scout out a private location for a picnic for two. At the Clover Point Park area, you’ll see dogs playing, kites dancing in the wind, and if you walk down to the water-level, you’ll find lots of places to enjoy the company of just one another. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular here, as are the starry skies.

Specialty shops like Tractor Everyday Healthy Foods on the edge of Victoria’s Inner Harbour, or the Root Cellar Village Green Grocer or the Red Barn Market have all you need for tasty picnic: fresh fruits and vegetables, deli meats and cheeses, gourmet crackers and bread – a cornucopia of selections for any palate or diet! Or if you are simply looking for a coffee pick-me-up and to satisfy that craving for a tasty snack, Milano Coffee, Fernwood Coffee, or Martha’s Delectables will fulfill your every need! For a truly authentic picnic experience, grab a blanket and head to L’Apero Wine & Cheese Bistro for one of their Boards on the Go before heading to your perfect picnic spot.
