YYJ – Victoria International Airport is an award-winning airport with a strong accessibility program, that’s certain to make a good first and last impression of your visit to the Garden City.
Accessible ground transportation
Get to and from YYJ with ease with an array of accessible ground transportation providers, including BC Transit, curbside taxi pick-up, car rentals, and ride hailing services.
Animal relief areas
If you're travelling with a service animal, you know how important it can be for them to find relief after a long flight. YYJ features two animal relief areas at the departures and arrivals terminals equipped with waste bags and recepticals.
Arrival and check-in
Parking lots are located close to the main terminal building and offer designated accessible parking space. There is designated curbside areas for drop off of passengers with reduced mobility.
When checking in, self-serve kiosks offer a navigational keypad with braille labelling and tactile keys that can be operated with one hand, a headphone jack with audible instructions, anti-glare touch monitors, and all at wheelchair accessible height.
Curbside assistance
If you're in need of extra assistance for your flight, YYJ proudly offers a Curbside Assistance Program, where Passenger Engagement and Safety Officers will help people with disabilities move throughout the terminal, offered for both arriving and departing passengers. The team will help with baggage, wheelchairs, and guiding assistance.
Hearing loops
The lower passenger departure lounge gate areas are equipped with hearing loops, which are designed to wirelessly transmit sound to a person's hearing aids and eliminate background noise.
Sensory resource kits
In support of autistic and neurodivergent travellers at Victoria International airport, you can collect a free sensory resource kit from the customer service desk at the departures check-in. These kits include various items such as noise cancelling headphones, activity books, fidget spinners, as well as squeeze and stuffed toys, to help take the edge off of the travel experience.
Washrooms
All washrooms are equipped with accessible features such as wheelchair accessible stalls, support bars, and emergency call alarms.
Additional programs
YYJ also proudly participates in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program to help provide folks with a non-visible disability a discrete way of signalling to airport staff that they may require additional support. You can pick up a free lanyard at the Customer Service desk in the departures check-in, the Information Desk at arrivals, or the Victoria Airport Authority office.
The airport also offers MagnusCards, a smartphone application for iOS and Android, that offers step-by-step audio, visuals, and text to make activities more manageable for people with disabilities. Printable Victoria International Airport decks are also available on their website.
